When many of the inshore species of fish caught from the shore in Japan are quite small compared to say boat fishing, a hook remover can be a useful tool when hooks are stuck inside a fish. Depending on the hook type (often without an eye) the remover can be slid down the line to the hook bend, then pushed to remove the hook. Various hole sizes on the market to suit hooks used.
